Charles Darwin University (CDU)’s Bachelor of Nursing is a professionally accredited degree that meets the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) qualification criterion for registration as a Division 1 nurse in Australia. As a graduate of the Bachelor of Nursing, you are prepared to be a safe, collaborative, articulate and ethical registered nurse who is responsive to local, national and regional health care needs and aware of emerging global health care trends.

The course is offered externally (online) and internally (on campus). Regardless of the mode of enrolment, all students are required to complete a full-time on-campus simulation block at an approved CDU venue in each year level of the course, as preparation for clinical placement. Simulation blocks are offered at Casuarina and Sydney campuses. CDU allocates places in simulation blocks and cannot guarantee a place at a specific venue. All costs associated with attendance at simulation blocks are your responsibility.

Graduates of this course are eligible to apply for registration with the Health Licensing Authority (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia).

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Academic entry requirements

    • Successful completion of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (or equivalent) and the awarding of an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 60*.
    • Successful completion of a national qualification at Certificate IV level or higher.
    • Successful completion of at least 0.5 year of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma.
    • Overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications considered equivalent to the above Australian qualifications.
    • Attainment of a STAT Multiple Choice score of 135 (or a score of 145 if prior to May 2010).
    • Successful completion of the Tertiary Enabling Program, the Preparation for Tertiary Success courses, or other recognised tertiary preparation course.
    • Submission of an acceptable personal competencies statement and/or employment experience.

* After any applicable adjustment factors have been applied.

English language requirements

All HE applicants are expected to demonstrate the minimum English language proficiency requirements for their chosen course of study. CDU assumes domestic applicants applying are proficient in the English language. Therefore, domestic applicants do not need to prove their proficiency.

The minimum English language requirement for this course is met by either:

    • providing a declaration that English is your primary language and you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six (6) years of continuous education that is equivalent to secondary education taught and assessed in English in one of the recognised countries*, including at least two years between years 7 and 12.
    • (*recognised countries include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America)
    • undertaking one of the following English language tests and obtaining the minimum requirements listed below.
IELTS Academic Module A minimum overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 7.0.
Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) Test not accepted for this course.
Common European Framework Certificate of English Proficiency Test not accepted for this course.
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic module A minimum overall pass of 65 and 65 across all modules (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) A minimum overall score of 94 and a minimum 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing and 23 for speaking.

* All tests are valid for two years from the date of the test to the date of commencement at CDU, unless otherwise specified.
* Where applicable, international applicants must also satisfy the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) English language requirements for student visa applications

Pre-clinical requirements

Students must provide proof that they have met all university and State/Territory pre-clinical requirements before they can undertake those units that include clinical placements. These requirements include, but are not limited to, immunisation requirements, Senior First Aid qualification, annual criminal record checks and/or working with children clearances and/or fitness-to-practice requirements.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course consists of 24 units. Two (2) common units provide students with the foundation knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete the course, prepare them for lifelong learning and promote the concept of cultural safety in practice, in particular to addressing the needs of Indigenous and multi-cultural Australians.

Twenty-one (21) compulsory core units provide students with essential knowledge that underpins a population health and person-centred approach to nursing practice when caring for people with acute and chronic health problems. The specialist elective unit provides greater depth of knowledge and allows students to study a generalised or specialty subjects in which they have a specific interest.

A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 240 credit points (cp) as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.
